What to Look for in a Rebounder

Surface Material

Durability is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a trampoline, and because the surface material is the first part of the trampoline you’ll come in contact with, it’s essential that it will live up to consistent use. 

“Most trampoline mats are made out of artificial fibers like nylon or polyethylene,” says Aly Giampolo, founder and method director at the ness in New York City. She says that, although the materials themselves can vary, finding a surface that is heavily woven is key for a strong, but supportive and soft trampoline.

Springs

“The type of spring on the trampoline you purchase is one of the most important elements to consider as you make your choice,” explains Giampolo. Typically, a trampoline’s surface is attached to the frame by a series of springs that lend to the signature bounce of the trampoline. Steel springs are heavy-duty and durable, but they can also be noisy. Giampolo also notes that metal springs that are too strong can pull the mat too tight—taking away from the low-impact nature of the trampoline. 

Bungee cords can also be used in place of springs. While they might not be as durable, they can be gentler and quieter. Bungees may also be easier on the joints, knees, and back due to the depth of the bounce.

Safety Pads

When thinking of a trampoline, many might instinctively think of the large, outdoor trampolines that are kept in backyards. The terms “rebounder” or “fitness trampoline” are used interchangeably and refer to versions that are 1/3 the size of large, full-size trampolines. 

Both the larger trampolines and the smaller rebounders offer unique benefits. "Bouncing on a full-sized trampoline can potentially provide more exercise per minute than a mini-trampoline because you can produce larger bounces that go deeper into the jumping surface, producing greater g-forces and more muscular engagement,” says Hines. However, due to their larger size, the use of traditional trampolines is usually limited to the outdoors.

Also, due to their slower “bounce frequency,” it's generally more challenging to execute faster-paced exercises like jumping jacks on traditional trampolines when compared to mini trampolines (or rebounders), so the latter is usually favored when it comes to cardio exercise. 

What shoes/socks should I wear on a trampoline or rebounder?

Hines recommends that those with health issues first consult their doctor or health professional to make sure it’s the right exercise for them, as jumping on a trampoline or rebounder can be a strenuous activity for some. “When it comes to rebounding, people with chronic conditions with their knees, vertebrae, or discs should use an extra dose of caution before they start, and so should people who have a history of concussions or head injuries (those g-forces affect the entire body, from head to toe),” says Hines.
